A spokesperson for Formula E has confirmed informal talks with Fernando Alonso over the prospect of the Spaniard joining the all-electric series in the future.
McLaren driver Alonso will leave Formula 1 once the 2018 season wraps up, with the veteran looking to pursue other racing interests.
His hunger to compete in F1 has waned over the past few years with McLaren, who have struggled to compete for victories in the hybrid era.
Formula E are hopeful that the 37-year-old would consider competing in their championship, perhaps from the 2019/20 season.
“We’ve been speaking to Fernando on a friendly and informal basis for a while and he’s always been very clear with us,” a Formula E spokesperson told e-racing365.
“Hopefully he will take a closer look at our championship and appreciate how much drivers can make a difference in our races and then evaluate his interest on whether to join the pack.
“It will then be up to teams to go after such a great talent, but he’ll always be welcome in our championship.”
Alonso has previously claimed that Formula E did not interest him currently, but refused to rule anything out.
"All the categories are interesting," the McLaren man told AS. "I watch them all on television, I'm passionate about racing. But right now it is not within the plans."
