Liberian president George Weah came out of retirement on Tuesday night to appear for his senior national side in a friendly against Nigeria.

The 51-year-old former Monaco, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea star played 79 minutes against a strong Super Eagle team.

The occasion saw Liberia retire Weah’s famous number 14 jersey, which he wore for one last time, before receiving a standing ovation upon leaving the pitch.

Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo scored the goals for Nigeria to secure a 2-1 win, but the night was all about Weah, who remains the only African winner of the Ballon d’Or.

The living legend will now turn his focus back to running the West African country, having become president at the end of 2017 when he received 60 percent of the popular vote in a national election.
