German cyclist André Greipel won the first stage of the 2018 Tour of Britain in Newport, Wales on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Lotto–Soudal rider beat Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott) and Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) to the line.

This was Greipel's sixth in the Tour of Britain and 154th in his career. He has also won 11 individual stages of the Tour de France.

Greipel, who was born in Rostock, East Germany, is pleased to have won the first stage of the competition.

"Gaviria went from really far back - he did a really good job. I knew it was going to be hard for Gaviria to be in front and I think I timed the sprint perfectly,” Greipel told BBC.

"I'm happy that I could finally win again. It's always prestigious to win a stage here and if you can win on the first day, the week is already saved."

Team Sky duo Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas, who both decided against competing in the Vuelta a España, finished safely in the peloton.
