Turkish Super Lig giants Fenerbahce SK have explained why their new signing Andre Ayew missed their clash against SL Benfica.
The Ghana international watched on as the Yellow Canaries were beaten 1-0 by Portuguese giants Benfica in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday.
The third round qualifying round first-leg encounter was played at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon.
Fenerbahce head coach Philip Cocu revealed that an ankle injury to Ayew was the reason why he was left out of their clash with Benfica.
Ayew, who was not involved in training after the Yellow Canaries' friendly match against Italian side Cagliari's injury, was not included in the squad for the game.
"We are ready for the match, we are all right now. Ayew did the workout but we saw some problems," Cocu said on Football Ghana.
"Taking any risk could prolong your disability. He wanted to be a player but he would have to wait for the second game."
Ayew recently joined the Yellow Canaries from English Championship outfit Swansea City on a season-long loan deal.
The second-leg clash against Benfica will take place at the Ülker Stadyumu Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Spor Kompleksi in İstanbul on Tuesday.
Before facing Benfica, Fenerbahce will take on Bursaspor at home in their first game of the 2018/19 Super Lig season on Sunday.
