Liverpool FC have confirmed that Joel Matip will miss the team's first English Premier League (EPL) match of the 2018/19 season.
The former Cameroon international is currently nursing an injury which he picked up during Liverpool's pre-season tour in the United States of America (USA).
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has since revealed that Matip and his club team-mate Ragnar Klavan will both miss the team's clash with West Ham United this weekend.
The German tactician did, however, confirm that England international Joe Gomez, who is a defender by trade, could feature against the Hammers.
"I think yes. It was nothing serious but for tonight (against Torino) it was not possible. He played on Saturday and now it’s Tuesday, but he should be [fine]," Klopp said on the club's official website.
The Reds thrashed Italian Serie A side Torino 3-1 in their last pre-season friendly match at home on Tuesday.
"Dejan [Lovren] is in, he had not a very long holiday. For Raggy [Klavan] and Joel [Matip], probably they are not fit and cannot play for the weekend," he continued.
Klopp also indicated young defender Nat Phillips is also an option for the Reds technical team heading into the clash with the Hammers.
"But we don’t need 12 centre-halves, we only need two at least and one to change would be extremely cool," he continued.
"Nat is there, though. I really liked his pre-season, it was really strong and proved a lot and that was cool."
The Reds are scheduled to host West Ham at their iconic home ground, Anfield Stadium in Liverpool on Sunday.
