Eredivisie giants PSV and Feyenoord will open the 2018/19 Dutch top flight season when they clash in the Super Cup at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven at 18h00 CAT today.

PSV earned their place in the traditional curtain-raiser after they claimed the Eredivisie title last season, with a haul of 83 points from their 34 matches – ensuring they came home well clear of nearest chasers Ajax.

Feyenoord, meanwhile, triumphed in the KNVB Beker (Dutch FA Cup) by thrashing AZ 3-0 in the final back in April.

Both teams have undergone some changes coming into the 2018/19 season. PSV named former player Mark van Bommel as their new coach back in June, with the 41-year-old replacing Philip Cocu after his departure for Turkey’s Fenerbahce.

The Eredivisie champions have also seen some upheaval in the transfer market, with the likes of Santiago Arias, Joshua Brenet and Jordy de Wijs leaving the club, while players such as Denzel Dumfries and Angelino have been brought in.

Feyenoord’s most notable departure was midfield kingpin Karim El Ahmadi, as the Moroccan left for Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad.

He has been replaced as captain by veteran Robin van Persie, while the Moroccan influence remains at the Feyenoord club thanks to the presence of Yassin Ayoub (signed from FC Utrecht), Sofyan Amrabat and Mohamed El Hankouri.

PSV and Feyenoord have been regular combatants down the years, with their most recent clash taking place in the Eredivisie on February 25 this year: PSV won 3-1 in Rotterdam thanks to goals from Santiago Arias, Steven Bergwijn and Gaston Pereiro.
