The cycling fraternity has mourned the passing of Veranda Willems-Crelan rider Michael Goolaerts, who passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Paris-Roubaix.

The 23-year-old had a heavy crash early in the race and was treated on scene by doctors before being airlifted to a hospital in Lille. Sadly he did not make it through Sunday night and passed away surrounded by friends and family.

"It is with great unimaginable sadness that we have to communicate the passing of our rider and friend Michael Goolaerts," his team said in a message posted online.

"He passed away Sunday evening at 22:40 in Lille hospital in the presence of his family members and loves ones, who we keep in our thoughts. He died of cardiac arrest, all medical assistance was to no avail."

Goolaerts was the subject of numerous tributes from teams and riders – both current and retired – as well as media and race organisers.
