sam bird: formula e title is jean-eric vergne’s to lose

DS Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird believes he has momentum on his side as he attempts to chase down Formula E Drivers’ Championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne.

Bird is just 23 points adrift of the Techeetah driver following round 10 of the 2017/18 season in Zurich this past weekend.

The campaign will wrap up with a double-race weekend on the streets of New York City in just over a month’s time.

Bird is using reigning champion Lucas di Grassi’s comeback from a large points deficit last season as motivation in his own ambitions.

“This was a great opportunity to get points back and we took it and now we move on to New York with momentum,” Bird told e-racing365.

“The ball is still in JEV’s court enormously. He still has a race lead on me with two races to go so it is really his to lose but I’ll nick it off him if I can.

“It’s been done before hasn’t it,” he said, referring to di Grassi snatching the title at last season’s final event in Montreal.

DS Virgin Racing have punched above their weight this season, with the team competing strongly despite having little advancement from the car used in the 2016/17 season.

“It is all wildly above and beyond my expectation levels what we have done this season,” said Bird.

“I honestly thought P10 in the championship would be OK this year but my word it has been a completely different level to what we expected.”

Rounds 11 and 12 of the season will be held on the Brooklyn Street Circuit in NYC on 14 and 15 July.
