The 2019/20 Premier League season opens this coming weekend, with 10 fixtures played across England. We look at the top five Africans to watch in what should be a thrilling opening round of games.
Nicolas Pepe – Arsenal
The Ivory Coast winger has joined Arsenal in a club-record €80million from French Ligue 1 side Lille. The 24-year-old is set form a formidable front three for the Gunners alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Gabonese forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, and his debut could come on Sunday afternoon when Arsenal head to St. James Park to face Newcastle United.
Wilfried Zaha – Crystal Palace
After a European summer in which a mooted move to one of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ did not materialise, Wilfried Zaha remains a Crystal Palace player – at least at the time of writing. The 26-year-old Ivorian is being strongly linked with a big-money move to Everton, the very club the Eagles will play host to on Saturday afternoon. This could be his perfect chance to impress the Toffees and show why they are reportedly prepared to make him a club-record signing.
Mohamed Salah – Liverpool
The Egyptian superstar has not had a proper offseason for two years running (due to last year’s World Cup and the recent Africa Cup of Nations), but he still managed to look sharp and lively for Liverpool against Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend. The Pharaohs forward could well net the first goal of the season when the Reds host newly-promoted Norwich City on Friday night.
Moussa Djenepo – Southampton
A fresh face in the Premier League, Malian winger Moussa Djenepo was bought by Southampton on a four-year contract from Belgium’s Standard Liege back in June. The 21-year-old was part of Mali’s squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and he appeared in three of their matches in Egypt. Djenepo will hope to make his debut for the Saints in their match against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.
Trezeguet – Aston Villa
Aston Villa have been the busiest team in the transfer market and one of their acquisitions was Egyptian winger Mahmoud Hassan ‘Trezeguet’, bought from Turkish side Kasimpasa two weeks ago. The 24-year-old racked up 22 goals and 16 assists in the Super Lig over the past two seasons and will hope to make an immediate impression for the Villans when they head to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
