Former England international Wayne Rooney will join English Championship side Derby County from Major League Soccer (MLS) side D.C. United in January.
Rooney will sign an initial 18-month contract, with the option of a further year.
The 33-year-old, who scored 53 goals in 120 appearances for the Three Lions, will join Derby as a player-coach. According to Derby, he will develop his coaching credentials in preparation for a potential managerial career while at the club.
Rooney is Manchester United’s record all-time goalscorer with 253 goals.
Derby manager Phillip Cocu said as per the Rams website: “Wayne Rooney is an extremely talented and top-class footballer.
“It is an exciting prospect for him to be joining Derby County and he can bring so much to this squad, both on and off the pitch. He has enjoyed a wonderful career, both in club football and for England, and he still has so much to give as well.”
