Boston Red Sox icon Pedro Martinez described David Ortiz as “like a brother, like a family member” following the latter’s shooting.
Ortiz is recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he is in a serious but stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery.
The former MLB designated hitter and first baseman was reportedly shot in the back at a club in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday.

While discussing Ortiz's shooting on the MLB Network, Martinez got choked up and nearly broke down in tears.
He said that he is emotionally distraught that a "coward" would want to take the life of a role model such as Ortiz.
"It bothers me deeply," Martinez said, "And I feel for David like a brother, like a family member."
He added, “I don't have enough words to describe who David Ortiz is, what David means to baseball.”
The two retired superstars from the Dominican Republic have a combined 18 All-Star game appearances between them.
