Bora-Hansgrohe rider Maximilian Schachmann is pleased after beating big names in the 11.2km Tour of the Basque Country opening day individual time-trial in Spain.
The German cyclist timed 17min 10sec to finish ahead of Education First rider Dani Martinez and Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski on Monday.
French cycling star Julian Alaphilippe, who is a Deceuninck–Quick-Step rider, was fourth on this first of six stages.
“I have no idea how I managed to win this ahead of Alaphilippe and Kwiatkowski,” Schachmann said on IOL.
“It’s a very special win, because it’s a very difficult win,” the 2018 Germany's 'Cyclist of the Year' nominee added.
The Tour of the Basque Country which is one of 37 races that make up the UCI World Tour calendar continues with three hilly stages and it will come to end on Saturday.
