AFC Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has expressed his happiness for defender Joel Veltman, who scored his first goal of the season in the team’s 4-1 win over Willem II on Saturday.
The 27-year-old defender, who has seen little playing time this season, scored Ajax’s third goal in their impressive win at the Koning Willem II Stadion.
“How he [Veltman] came in today was excellent,” ten Hag said after the match. “If you can reward that as a right-back with a goal... he came forward at the right moment and finished well.
“It’s nice that players also experience that the level is many times higher than last season. That means we have undergone tremendous development as a team.”
Ten Hag would not reveal whether Veltman will retain his place in the team for the midweek UEFA Champions League clash at home to Italian giants Juventus.
“We still have to look at that. We have built it [the team] according to a certain plan. I still have to look at how Juventus plays exactly and what composition and strategy we will contrast with that. That it [including Veltman] seems to be a very logical move could very well be,” said the tactician.
You can see Ajax in further Eredivisie action when they host Excelsior in Amsterdam this Saturday.
The match will broadcast live on Fox Sports 2 from 18h20 CAT.
