PSV Eindhoven captain Luuk de Jong says their defeat to Eredivisie title rivals AFC Ajax this past weekend was “hard to take”.
The reigning champions remain on top of the Dutch championship, but their lead was cut to just two points after they succumbed 3-1 at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday 31 March.
“This defeat is hard to take,” said de Jong, who scored an equaliser for PSV after Ajax had Noussair Mazraoui sent off.
With the hosts having just 10 men, PSV had a great chance to claim a positive result and keep at least a five-point buffer at the top of the log.
Instead, a penalty from Dusan Tadic and a late strike from David Neres secured victory for the Amsterdam giants.
“We looked to make use of our numerical advantage and win the game,” continued de Jong, as quoted by PSV’s official website.
“We may have been too eager and opted for an attacking style of play, leaving plenty of space for counter-attacks.
“When we were 2-1 down, we pretty much did everything we could to snatch a late draw, but it was not to be.”
PSV’s leading scorer has refused to hit the panic button, though: “We have a two-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie table and have destiny in our own hands in the title race.”
The champions will resume their title defence on Thursday with a match at home to PEC Zwolle.
