The 2018/19 season of Formula E will see the introduction of an exciting new generation of electric racing cars, but there may be even more changes in the works than first anticipated.
Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag has hinted at ‘Mario Kart’ style power-ups, where a car driving on an alternative path on the track will receive an additional power boost.
“That is something we're looking at - it would be like Mario Bros when they get the little star and go faster,” Agag told Autosport in an interview.
“I think it's going to be great. I'm really excited about it. What is very clear is a procession is not going to happen because these elements are going to shake everything up - it's going to be pretty exciting.”
Formula E is already having a major shake-up next season, with the new generation cars offering greater speed and range to eliminated the need for mid-race car swaps and pit stops.
With mid-race stops eliminated, Formula E is looking for a new element to add variety to strategy, and the ‘Mario Kart’ idea could be just the start of radical changes to the sport.
