Mitchelton-Scott rider Simon Yates recorded a career first time trial victory on Paris-Nice stage five on Thursday.
The 26-year-old Brit set a good time early on in the 25.5km trial around Barbentane, and it proved to be enough as he held on for the win. The 2018 Vuelta a España winner shared his surprise in the result in the aftermath:
"It's unexpected," Yates told the race website.
"It's my first ever victory in a time trial, even as a youth cyclist."
Polish cyclist Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) leads the overall standings heading into Friday's stage 6, that will take the riders on a 176.5km trip through hills and climbs between Peynier and Brignoles.
Simon is the bother of Adam Yates who on Thursday took the leaders jersey at the Tirreno-Adriatico in Italy, just a few minutes after Simon's success.
