AFC Ajax coach Erik ten Hag has hailed his team’s midweek performance against Real Madrid as “close to perfection”.
The Eredivisie side put in a brilliant display at the Bernabeu to defeat the Spanish giants 4-1 and secure a 5-3 aggregate victory in the teams’ UEFA Champions League last 16 tie.
“This was pretty close to perfection. Everything was right, we won over two matches and we were able to play football today, we showed that we have a very good team,” ten Hag told the media after the match.
“Dusan Tadic was a great target man and also made a nice goal but I do not want to specifically highlight one player, the whole team was fantastic, and we have to build on that.
“A number of experts questioned this, but this is historic.”
Ten Hag also praised the KNVB (Dutch Football Association) for postponing their Eredivisie match against PEC Zwolle last weekend.
“That [postponing the game] was in the interests of the Dutch Eredivisie, and at the same time Dutch football can thank Ajax, because we get the points in. We remain active on three fronts and are now in the position to win prizes.”
The match against PEC has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, March 13. In the meantime, you can see Ajax in live Eredivisie action over the weekend when they host Fortuna Sittard in Amsterdam on Sunday evening. The game will be live on Fox Sports 2 from 17h35 CAT.
