PSV Eindhoven attacker Steven Bergwijn has revealed that their 2-0 win away to Excelsior in the Eredivisie this past weekend was a vital result.
The Eredivisie leaders and defending champions triumphed 2-0 at the Van Donge & De Roo Stadion on Saturday, with Bergwijn scoring in the eighth and 54th minutes.
The result broke a run of three successive draws for PSV, who have allowed Ajax to catch up in the race for the title.
“We needed to win,” said the 21-year-old after the match, adding: “We felt the pressure before the game.
“We are PSV and we are expected to win our games, always, so we are happy to have bagged another three points.”
Bergwijn has become the first player in the Dutch top flight to reach double figures as far as goals and assists are concerned – he has registered 11 goals and 12 assists.
“It has been on my mind”, admitted Bergwijn. “We have been on the receiving end of criticism lately. We have analysed our games and today we followed the tactics of our coach.”
Captain Luuk de Jong thought PSV had put in a solid display: “We dominated for large spells and Excelsior struggled to create any clear-cut chances.
“Unlike in our previous games, we did not lose possession and Excelsior failed to find their rhythm.”
PSV will look to claim another victory in the Eredivisie when they host NAC Breda on Saturday night. The match will be live on Fox Sports 1 from 20h35 CAT.
