Gent come into the game on the back of a 2-1 loss away to Waasland-Beveren last weekend. Giorgi Kvilitaia added some respectability to the score line after Max Caufriez and Francesco Forte had scored earlier goals for Beveren.
The result brought Gent’s winless spell to four matches across all competitions (though that does include advancing on penalties in the cup against KV Oostende) and they are placed seventh – outside the championship playoff berths.
Manager Jess Thorup has declared that the ‘Buffaloes’ will continue aiming for the top tier playoffs even though they are severely lacking in confidence.
Liege, meanwhile, are on a search for consistency. They claimed a 3-1 victory at home to Lokeren this past weekend (thanks to goals from Rzvan Marin, Maxime Lestienne and Renaud Emond) but have not managed to pick up successive league wins since the turn of the year.
Nonetheless, the Reds are well placed in third on the log and manager Michel Preud’homme has declared himself happy with their progress thus far.
In head-to-head terms, Gent and Liege have met in 63 matches across all competitions. The Buffaloes have claimed 28 wins compared to 24 for the Reds, while 11 games have been drawn.
The teams’ most recent meeting was a Belgian Pro League clash at Stade Maurice Dufrasne in July 2018 which Liege won 3-2 thanks to goals from Moussa Djenepo, Paul Jose M’Poku and Emond. Roman Yaremchuk and Stallone Limbombe were on the score sheet for Gent.
