Mahinda driver Pascal Wehrlein has credited his Mahindra team for giving him the confidence to claim a second-placed finish at the last Formula E race in Santiago, Chile.
The German’s first race outing Mahindra, at the Marrakesh round earlier this year, ended prematurely after he had significant contact with Lucas Di Grassi on the opening lap.
Yet the former F1 pilot bounced back strongly in Chile, finishing second after battling for the lead of the race with eventual race winner Sam Bird.
The 22-year old suffered high battery temperatures in the final few laps which thwarted his attempt to fight for the victory.
“I was pretty close to passing,” said Wehrlein. “I was starting to move into Turn 12 when the team told me I should slow and manage the gap behind as we were critical on temperatures – and I wanted to finish the race!
“It was a bit of a shame, and I was a bit angry in the car. Out of the car… now it’s a good feeling. The team and I are a perfect fit and a perfect match.
“In the first race, everyone was so kind to me and were saying what Jerome [D’Ambrosio] achieved I could’ve probably achieved as well. They’re giving me a lot of trust, confidence and I want to deliver the best.”
The next round of the 2018-19 Formula E season will be held in Mexico City on Saturday 16 February. Fox Sports 2 will have live coverage of free practice, qualifying and the race.
