Eric Abidal, the sporting director of Barcelona, admits the club can only wait for an answer from AFC Ajax star Frenkie de Jong as to whether he wants to join the Spanish champions.
The 21-year-old midfielder is one of Europe's most promising players and has been linked with some of the continent’s biggest names, including Barca, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
Abidal admits that the La Liga leaders are very keen on de Jong’s services and hope to land him, either in the current January transfer window or at the end of the season.
"This question has to be asked to the player. He knows there is interest from many clubs and he will make his decision. We can only wait, like everyone else,” explained the former French international.
De Jong has four goals from 16 appearances in the Eredivisie this season and will hope to play a key role for Ajax when they play in ‘De Klassieker’ against Feyenoord this coming weekend.
The match will be live on Fox Sports 1 from 15h20 CAT on Sunday 27 January.
Barcelona have already made two signing in the January window, bringing in Ghanaian forward Kevin-Prince Boateng from Sassuolo and defender Jeison Murillo from Valencia – both on loan deals.
Abidal said departures are also possible this month, with Malcom and Denis Suarez among those linked with moves away.
"We are happy with the squad but there is always a chance," Abidal added. "Players who are not playing very much can stay or leave, all scenarios will be evaluated."
