Eredivisie club PEC Zwolle are reportedly keen on signing Dutch defender Joost van Aken from EFL Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.
De Telegraaf claims that new Zwolle manager Jaap Stam is hoping to make van Aken his third signing of the January transfer window, having already secured the services of Pelle Clement and Lennart Thy.
The Eredivisie club would like to sign van Aken on loan but De Stentor adds it could be permanent if his contract is dissolved in Sheffield.
De Stentor also quoted Zwolle’s technical director as saying: “[Van Aken] is indeed on our shortlist.”
PEC are waiting to see whether new Owls boss Steve Bruce has any plans for the former Heerenveen defender before they look to complete the deal.
Van Aken joined Sheffield Wednesday from Heerenveen back in 2017 but the 24-year-old has seen his progress stalled by injuries. He has only made two appearances across all competitions this season.
The central defender has also been on the books of his home town club, Haarlem, as well as AFC Ajax before making his breakthough with Heerenveen. In addition, van Aken boasts two caps for the Dutch national U-21 team.
PEC are in need of reinforcements to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Eredivisie, as they are currently just three points from the bottom of the log.
