South African boxer Thulani Mbenge says he is fired up for his IBO Welterweight title defence against Germany’s Sebastian Formella this coming weekend.

The fight will be Mbenge’s first outside of South Africa, as he heads to Hamburg on Saturday night for a clash of two unbeaten competitors.

Mbenge, 27, was voted South African Boxer of the Year in 2018, beating the highly-rated Zolani Tete, IBO Cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena and fast-rising Azinga Fuzile to the honour.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist has picked up 12 of his 15 wins inside the distance.

This includes a victory over former IBF Lightweight Champion Miguel Vazquez, who quit after nine rounds of their fight in December last year.

“When it comes to power, I become too much for my opponents. Also when I switch, I become dangerous and hit the nose bone through their brains,” said the aggressive Mbenge.

“I am feeling great. It's been a good camp where we took our time. I am happy with what we have right now.

“It’s my first time as a pro outside of South Africa, but it will not shock my system because I fought overseas as an amateur.

“The fans must expect an explosive fight. I am feeling good, so I expect a positive result.”

Formella represents a serious threat to Mbenge, having won all 20 of his professional fights thus far.
